Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Biparjoy' Approaching Karachi and Gujarat, Residents Urged to Prepare
Karachi, Pakistan: In a rapid escalation, Cyclone 'Biparjoy' in the Arabian Sea has transformed into an "extremely severe cyclonic storm," leaving the coastal regions of Karachi and Gujarat on high alert. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that the cyclone is currently positioned approximately 770 kilometers south of Karachi, 750 kilometers south of Thatta, and 860 kilometers southeast of Ormara.
As the cyclonic storm gains strength, it is expected to maintain a northward trajectory, raising concerns for coastal areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that 'Biparjoy' will make landfall between Karachi in Pakistan and the Kutch district in Indian Gujarat on June 15. The IMD's forecast has prompted authorities in both countries to take precautionary measures and prepare for potential impact.
With sustained surface winds reaching 140-160 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 150 km/h, 'Biparjoy' presents a significant threat. The sea conditions around the storm's center are described as phenomenal, with towering waves reaching heights of 30-40 feet.
The PMD has issued a warning for southern and southeastern Sindh, including Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparker, and Mirpurkhas districts, as the cyclone progresses on a north-northeast path. Beginning from the evening of June 13, these regions should anticipate heavy rain, thunderstorms, and the likelihood of torrential downpours. Squally winds, ranging from 60-80 km/h, are also expected, posing a risk of damage to vulnerable structures. Furthermore, the cyclone may result in a storm surge of three meters (8-10 feet).
In light of the impending danger, the PMD has advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the open sea from June 11 until the cyclone passes. The Arabian Sea is anticipated to be tumultuous and treacherous, with high tides posing significant risks along the coast.
The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has responded to the growing threat by issuing a 'red alert.' To ensure the safety of ships and port facilities, the KPT has implemented 'emergency guidelines.' These guidelines stipulate that shipping activities will be suspended if wind speeds exceed 25 nautical miles. Cargo ship operations will be halted altogether if wind speeds exceed 35 nautical miles.
Taking preemptive action, the Karachi administration has imposed restrictions under Section 144, prohibiting fishing, sailing, swimming, and bathing in the sea. This measure aims to safeguard the public from the potential hazards associated with the approaching cyclone.
Authorities in Pakistan and India remain vigilant as Cyclone 'Biparjoy' intensifies and poses a significant threat to coastal communities. Continuous monitoring, timely updates, and adherence to safety protocols are of utmost importance. Residents in the affected regions are urged to stay informed through official weather advisories and heed the guidance provided by local authorities to mitigate risks and ensure their well-being.
