PTI President Parvez Elahi Arrested Again After Court Discharges Him in Corruption Cases

In a surprising turn of events, Parvez Elahi, the President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been arrested once again by the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) shortly after being discharged by a Gujranwala court in two corruption cases. This marks the second instance of re-arrest for the PTI leader following relief granted by a court.

The recent discharge occurred in two corruption cases where Elahi was accused of accepting kickbacks in the development funds allocated for road construction in Gujrat. However, he was swiftly re-arrested in connection with a case related to alleged illegal recruitment in the Punjab Assembly during his tenure as the speaker.

This sequence of events mirrors a similar incident where Elahi was arrested outside a Lahore court a day earlier. Initially, the court ordered his release in a corruption case involving Rs70 million of misappropriated development funds in Gujrat. However, moments later, he was rearrested in another corruption case registered against him in Gujranwala by the Punjab ACE.

Moonis Elahi, Parvez Elahi's son, denounced the arrests as baseless and claimed that his father had been discharged in all three cases in Lahore and Gujranwala. Moonis suggested that these cases were motivated by victimization rather than legitimate charges.

During the hearing, the investigation team informed the court that Elahi was arrested in two cases registered in Gujranwala. The team strongly requested a 14-day physical remand to conduct further investigations and recover funds that are believed to have been obtained unlawfully. They are determined to uncover the truth and bring justice by thoroughly examining the origins of the suspicious wealth. Their aim is to return the money to those who have been wronged. However, the court ultimately released Elahi due to a lack of evidence and rejected the request for physical remand.

Elahi's lawyer revealed that his client had been deprived of his necessary medication while in police custody. Elahi himself expressed his concerns, stating that he had difficulty obtaining his medicines and was even denied access to the bathroom. He emphasized that he would accept the court's decision, presenting it as a test for the judiciary.

The case involving illegal recruitment in the Punjab Assembly alleges that Elahi orchestrated 12 unlawful recruitments for Grade 17 positions. These appointments were reportedly made by tampering with records and using fake testing services. The ACE spokesperson confirmed that the investigation substantiated these claims and announced the arrest of Secretary Rai Mumtaz Hussain, who was allegedly involved in the fraudulent recruitment process alongside Parvez Elahi.
