NDMA advises traffic plans and proactive coordination in light of expected rainfall in Karachi
Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and port, is expected to experience moderate rainfall tomorrow, according to weather expert Jawad Memon. Several areas in the city witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall today, with more showers anticipated over the coming days until July 10.
In light of the forecasted rainfall, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided guidelines to the city and district administration to prepare for potential flooding in vulnerable areas. One of the key recommendations is the establishment of contingency traffic plans in urban centers prone to flooding, ensuring swift de-watering operations in flooded underpasses.
The district administration has been advised to conduct thorough stock-taking and reconnaissance efforts while raising public awareness in vulnerable areas. Of particular concern are Marala Headworks on the River Chenab and Jassar on the River Ravi, which have the potential for flood flows until July 20.
To facilitate swift response and assistance, rescue services and leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been urged to ensure the presence of personnel in the indicated areas. Additionally, all stakeholders are encouraged to maintain proactive coordination to ensure a prompt and streamlined response to any emergencies that may arise.
Meanwhile, the NDMA has also issued a separate warning for north/northeastern Punjab, including cities like Lahore, Sialkot, and Narowal. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected in these regions, with high or very high river flows anticipated in Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and associated Nullahs (tributaries) such as Bhimber, Aik, Deg, Palkhu, and Basanter. The authorities have cautioned that these conditions may result in urban flooding in municipal areas and landslides in hilly regions.
Other areas likely to experience thunderstorms and heavy rainfall include Karachi, Tharparkar, Sukkur, Larkana, Hyderabad, Badin, Shaheed Benazirabad, northeastern Balochistan (Sibbi, Zhob, Kohlu, Qila Saifullah, Khuzdar, Barkhan, Loralai, Dera Bugti, and Lasbela), and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Bannu, DI Khan, Malam Jabba, Balakot).
With safety as a top priority, the authorities are taking proactive measures to mitigate the potential risks associated with anticipated rainfall and thunderstorms. By implementing the suggested guidelines and fostering effective coordination, Karachi and other vulnerable areas in Pakistan can respond swiftly and effectively to any adverse weather-related incidents that may occur.
